Must see events:

“Palio dei Ciuchi”(Palio of the donkeys): Seen as a very special and exciting event, a ‘palio’ is a banner or cloth won during some type of traditional race or contest, in this case a donkey race.

Definitely deserving to be experienced and appreciated in all its charm and uniqueness, the Palio is held on the first Sunday after the 8th of September, to celebrate the Nativity of Mary and the feast of the Blessed Lady of Grace.

In its 50th year, in 2007, this event remains ever exciting and interesting, never failing to capture the attention of visitors and participants.

The festival includes a parade in traditional clothing, recreating the long history and customs of Campagnatico. However the main event of this festival is, of course, the Palio between the historic districts of the town: Pieve, Santa Maria, Castello and Centro, who race to win the ‘palio’, a painted cloth of great pride and honour.

The race of the donkeys is held between the street Via Roma and the Palazzo del Municipio.

During the race there are two sections, the first is a race with a donkey representing every city district, and the second is the final between those who won the district sections.

At the end of the race the winner is crowned in the Piazza del Municipio and the victory celebrations can begin.
