Not to miss:
La Parrocchiale dei Santissimi Filippo e Giacomo (The Parish of Saints Filippo and Giacomo): an enchanting Renaissance building, reconstructed during the 16th century and completed by a bell tower furnished with four stunning bells. Inside is also fascinating and unique, custodian of a wooden crucifix dating back to the 1400’s and numerous frescoes depicting angels and saints.
Church of the Madonna delle Macchie: built just outside the centre of Castiglione in Terverina during the second half of the 18th century, it is embellished with a wonderful and richly decorated facade, whilst inside is home to many precious works of art.
Church of St. Rocco: a sacred building constructed outside the city and whilst very simple it is extremely beautiful and dates back to the second half of the 19th century, once serving as a hospital for those with contagious diseases.
Pastoral Church of the Madonna delle Nevi: again just outside the ancient village of Castiglione in Terverina, inside you can find a truly unique nave, as well as a fresco depicting the “Madonna delle Nevi” (Madonna of the Snow) and numerous effigies, paintings, inscriptions and works of art, which give the church a truly interesting and fascinating aspect.
Church and Crypt of St. Lucia: a charming sacred building, whilst deconsecrated, it was built in the second half of the 14th century, just outside the town, for Pope Urban V.
Rocca Monaldeschi (Monaldeschi Fortress): a splendid 13th century structure built for the Monaldeschi family, with the purpose of defending the town from enemy attack. Interestingly, the fortress was entirely built with the rubble from a nearby town, destroyed during a war and whilst a good part of the ancient structure has, in the course of the centuries, been covered by newer structures, it still remains today a beauty and fascination that is truly one of a kind.
Museum of Wine: an interesting display of instruments and objects used in the past in the production of wine in this territory. The centre stretches across numerous rooms dedicated to oenology; with documents and exhaustive explanations regarding the cultivation of the vine, the production of wine and the importance that this section of Lazio dedicates to the creation of products of the highest quality.
History:
The history of the city of Castiglione in Terverina is extremely interesting, with roots stretching as far back as the age of the Etruscans, when there existed a primitive settlement in the area.
The centre then became an important possession of the Roman Empire, managing to boast great fame and relevance.
From the beginning of the Middle Ages the centre of Castiglione in Terverina fell under the powerful house of the Monaldeschi and the Savelli family, up until 1539, when it became part of the Duchy of Castro, before falling into the hands of the Papal States, who maintained power until the town was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
