Events

A delightful town found in the north of Tuscia Laziale, Latera annually hosts important and interesting events, festivals and cultural celebrations, that never fail to draw a great deal of attention and interest.

Here is a list of the main events held Latera throughout the year:

January:

-“Befanate”: with no literal English translation, the Befana is much like Santa Claus for the Italians and is depicted as an old lady who brings gifts on the day of the Epiphany. This festival celebrates this figure on the 5th and 6th with games, shows and great entertainment.

-“Sant’Antonio Abate”(St. Antonio Abate): beautiful festivities in honour of the Saint.

March:

-“Festa della Madonna”(Festival of the Madonna): traditional festivities in honour of Our Lady who, according to local legends, opened her eyes in front of the citizens inside the Church of St Giuseppe in Latera.

April:

-“Processione del Cristo Morto”(Procession of the Dead Christ): a suggestive, evocative and realistic recreation in the streets of the town.

May:

-“Sapori d’Europa”(Flavours of Europe): a gastronomic fair celebrating the different cultures and cuisines of Europe.

-“Sant’Isidoro”(St. Isidoro): a historic- religious celebration in honour of the Saint, with theatre shows and various entertainment organized on the 28th.

June:

-“Festa della Madonna della Cava”(Festival of the Madonna della Cava): beautiful and traditional celebrations in honour of the Madonna, who is said to have protected the town during the bombardments of the Second World War.

July:

-“Festival della Musica dell’Alta Tuscia”(Festival of the Music of Alta Tuscia): an important and unique musical festival with shows and concerts by the talented artists of the territory.

August:

-“Festa della Birra”(Beer Festival): held in the first half of the month.

-“Bivacco Medievale”(Medieval Camp): very suggestive and fascinating historic recreation that transports the town back to the Middle Ages under the power of the great Farnese family. A fantastic and exciting insight into the turbulent but unique history of Latera and all of Tuscany.

September:

-“Sant’Angelo Martire”(St. Angelo Martire): celebrations for the patron saint, held during the first days of the month.

October:

-“Sagra del Marrone”(Brown Festival): a traditional festival celebrating the chestnut, a typical product of the area.

November:

-“Festa di San Clemente”(St. Clemente Festival)

-“Festa di Santa Cecilia”(St Cecilia Festival): an extremely popular gastronomic festival with concerts and musical shows to celebrate St Cecilia. During the festival the town’s cellars are opened and visitors have the chance to try some of the delicious traditional dishes and high quality wines of the territory.

- Festa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo”(Festival for St. Andrea Apostolo)

December:

-“Natale a Latera”(Christmas at Latera): colourful festivities for Christmas, with seasonal markets, traditional fairs and the chance to try the typical products of the zone.

Must see events:

“Sagra del Marrone”(Brown Festival): An event not to be missed, this festival is something of great importance and pride for the village of Latera, who aim to promote and celebrate the high quality of chestnuts grown in the territory.

The festival is held on the last weekend of October and is seen as the most appreciated and beautiful food and wine event hosted in Latera.

Each year this event draws a great number of tourists who come to try the delicious roasted chestnuts, accompanied by a glass of good local wine and enjoy the many performances and entertainment held on the streets the historic center.

The festival also includes demonstrations on the interesting cultivation of chestnuts, as well as a lovely  dinner offering only the best traditional dishes and local wines.
