Manciano, a delightful town on the Maremman hills, hosts, throughout the year, many interesting and enjoyable traditional and cultural events and festivals that deserve to be visited and appreciated.
Here are some of the best events held in Manciano, in chronological order:
January:
- “Festa di Sant’Antonio” (Festival of St. Antonio): held in the nearby district of Marsiliana, it includes a procession of animals who are later blessed in the town square.
April:
- “Sagra dell’Agnello” (Lamb Festival): a popular, local and well known manifestation held in the splendid neighbourhood of San Martino sul Fiora.
May:
- “Mercatino” (Little Market): held in the streets of the Manciano, this festival involves stalls and markets selling various goods, as well as different forms of entertainment, including musical and artistic shows.
- “Festa della Fragola” (Festival of the Strawberry): organized during the last week of the month in the enchanting location of Marsiliana.
August:
-“Festa della Birra” (Festival of the Beer): held in the nearby village of San Martino sul Fiora.
September:
- “Festa delle Cantine” (Festival of the Cellar): the most important and celebrated event in Manciano, it is organized during the first week of September to promote the cellars of the town, which are opened offering visitors the chance to try some of the high quality wines, typical products and cuisine of the Maremma.
December:
- “Seguendo un filo d’olio” (Following a train of oil): an extremely important gastronomic manifestation with stalls and markets set up along the streets of Manciano.
Must see events:
“Festa delle Cantine” (Festival of the Cellar): Seen as the most important and interesting event held in Manciano, annually succeeding to draw high levels of attendance, the festival is organized in the first weekend of September and runs from Friday to Sunday.
The event offers visitors the opportunity to understand and appreciate the extraordinary quality of the Maremman food and wine. The festival, which is carefully planned and organized by the Pro Loco Manciano, never fails to be pleasant and fun, mixing great food with great wine and great entertainment to make an event worthy of being appreciated and experienced.
During the three days of the festival, the wineries are opened in the town centre, in a practice that commemorates the traditions of the past. Visitors can try any of the delicious traditional dishes and products local to the Maremma, accompanying them with a glass of good wine.
The weekend is then capped off by fantastic local entertainment, including street artists, bands and various shows, making this event even more enjoyable and unique.
The Festival of the Cellars is organized on the day of the Holy Cross, which is why, on Sunday morning, there is always a solemn mass.
Visitors can then enjoy the wonderfully decorated streets filled with numerous stalls and markets selling products and handicrafts of fine workmanship during the day and colourful food, wine, performances and events during the evening.
