Events

Overlooking the beautiful coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the heart of Tuscia Lazio, is the delightful town of Montalto di Castro. Throughout the year this wonderful town hosts numerous events and cultural festivals celebrating their traditions and local cuisine.

Here is a list of the main events organized in Montalto di Castro, from January to December:

January:

- “Festa di Sant’Antonio Abate”(Festival of St. Antonio Abate): Held on 17th or the subsequent Sunday, this festival includes an animal blessing and the chance to try the  typical products of the area.

February:

-“Carnevale”(Carnival): traditional celebrations for Carnival with a colourful costume parade, floats, music and great food and wine.

March:

-“Festa dei Santissimi Quirino e Candido”(Festival of the Saints Quirino and Candido): a beautiful religious festival for the patron saints.

April:

-“Anteprima d’estate”(Preview of Summer): musical shows, entertainment and celebrations for the beautiful Italian summer.

-“Festa della Madonna della Vittoria”(Festival of the Madonna della Vittoria): traditional and elaborate religious festivities held on the last Sunday of the month.

May:

-“Festa di San Giuseppe Operaio”(Festival of St. Giuseppe Operaio): a wonderful celebration in honour of the saint with musical shows held on the 1st.

-“Sagra dell’Asparago Verde”(Green Asparagus Festival): an interesting local festival celebrating one of the typical products of Montalto di Castro.

June:

-“Montalto Estate”(Montalto Summer): colourful and entertaining concerts, opened air shows, cabaret, musical entertainment and theatre productions celebrating the beautiful Tuscan summer

July:

-“Montalto estate”(Montalto Summer): Such a popular festival, this event is held twice a year celebrating the wonderful summer of the area with shows and various entertainment.

-“Sagra del Melone”(Melon Festival): a lovely gastronomic festival.

August:

-“Festa del Mare”(Sea Festival): a great local event celebrating the sea culture of the town with a parade to the ocean and a pyrotechnics show

-“Sagra del Fiore di Zucca”(Zucchini Flower Festival): another gastronomic fair held in the town.

-“Corteo Storico”(Historic Parade): a colourful and interesting parade celebrating the unique history and traditions of the town through the streets of the town.

December:
-“Periodo Natalizio”(Christmas Period): concerts, theatre productions, shows and seasonal events for Christmas.

Must see events:

“Sagra dell’Asparago Verde”(Green Asparagus Festival): Perhaps the most awaited event of Montalto di Castro, this festival takes place in the second half of May and whilst a relatively new event, it never fails to draw a great deal of attention and visitors who come to experience its particularity and beauty.

During the festival, held for three days, there are exhibitions and demonstrations of agricultural machinery, a tractor race, tastings and the chance to try the typical products produced local, including the trusty green asparagus.

A fantastic day out, this festival truly deserves to be appreciated and experienced. It is a chance to see the local traditions and customs of the wonderful town of  Montalto di Castro, try its delicious cuisine and local products and visit its ancient churches, palaces and beautiful historical monuments.
