Immersed amongst the beautiful scenery of the Maremma, the splendid village of Montieri is a delightful town rich in art history and culture.
Each year Montieri hosts various charming events and festivals, celebrating their amazing history and culture. Here is a list of the most important traditional events held in Montieri, from January to December:
May:
-“Festa di Primavera”(Spring Festival): an interesting event during which there are guided tours through the countryside, providing visitors with a chance to see the beautiful churches and ancient monuments of the area, as well as enjoy the local markets, fairs and typical products.
July:
-“Festa della Birra”(Beer Festival): Held on the second weekend of July in Boccheggiano, a district of Montieri.
August:
-“Guaita di Travale”: An event held in the district of Travale, with musical entertainment, stalls, raffles and historic reenactments of medieval battles and the story of Guaita of Travale.
-“Sagra della Bistecca”(Festival of the Steak): Held in the beginning of August, this festival includes several food stalls offering visitors the chance to try the delicious local cuisine.
-“Tempora Artis Magicae”: A historical re-enactment of the Middle Ages, filled with magic, witches and centuries old mystery, this festival also includes food stalls, explanations and absolutely fascinating shows about the history and the process of the Inquisition.
October:
-“Sagra della Castagna”(Chestnut Festival): Held on the last two Sundays of October, this festival celebrates the chestnut with stalls offering local products and dishes traditional to the area, including schiacce (thin strips of focaccia with either sardines or dried figs) and castagnaccio (a typical sweet treat made with chestnut flour and pine nuts).
Must see events:
-“Tempora Artis Magicae”: A charming event and one of its kind, this festival always manages to capture the interest and excitement of its visitors and participants.
Held in the small town of Montieri, it is seen as a chance to experience an amazing magical past, bringing to life the Middle Ages with historical re-enactments, demonstrations, stories and performances.
During the festival, which takes place in August, there are guided tours around the beautiful countryside, to give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the enchanting charm of the area, embellished with magnificent churches, striking monuments and ancient buildings.
The event is also an important food and wine exhibition, during which visitors can taste the local products and wines, whilst being entertained by a reconstruction of the Medieval Inquisition and evenings of readings.
