The city of Scansano, immersed amongst the wonderful plains of the Maremma, is seen as the ideal location for events, manifestations and popular festival.
This splendid Tuscan town is, in fact, host of many interesting and important cultural and gastronomic events throughout the year. Here is a list of some of the best, in chronological order:
April
- “Festa di San Giorgio” (Festival of St Giorgio): the festivities in honour of this saint are organized in the nearby district of Montorgiali on the last Sunday of the month. During the celebrations there are typical local products to buy and traditional cuisine to taste.
May:
- “Aspettando…Porco Vacca”: a very popular local festival held on the streets of Scansano, the festival includes markets, food stalls and enjoyable entertainment.
- “Improvvisazione Poetica” (Poetic Improvisation): an event which, in 2007, celebrated its 10th year and is extremely unique and fascinating. Held in the nearby district of Pomonte, it lasts for two days and includes wonderful poetic events and interesting cultural shows.
- “Sagra del Tortello” (Festival of the Tortello): tortello is an Italian dessert that is a mix between a traditional torte and jelly. During this festival, organized in the neighbourhood of Poggioferro, there are many opportunities to taste this typical Maremman dish.
June:
- “Lo Sbaracco”: during this festival the shopkeepers of Scansano display their wares under an outdoor gazebo and shed. The displayed products are sold at a very low price, offering guests the chance to get a good bargain.
July:
- “Sagra della Lasagna” (Festival of the Lasagna): organized in the small town of Pancole.
- “Sagra dello Strozzaprete” (Festival of the Strozzaprete): Strozzaprete is a type of pasta local to the area and the town of Murci, where this festival is held.
August:
- “Festa del Santo Patrono” (Festival of the Patron Saint): a traditional festival in honour of the patron saint of the town, and held in the district of Baccinello.
- “Sulle Ali del Vento” (On the Wings of the Wind): a cultural event held in Scansano itself.
September:
- “Festa Mercatino della Creatività” (Creative Market Festival): in its 10th year in 2007, this festival always draws a lot of interest and tourists. During the manifestation there are stalls of fascinating objects and creations, as well as clown shows and artistic demonstrations.
- “Festa dell’Uva”: (Festival of the Grape): a traditional local festival organized in the streets of the historic centre. An event of great interest, it celebrates the high quality wine produced locally, giving visitors the opportunity to try the different wines and local dishes.
October:
- “Operazione Fiume” (River Operation): in its 5th year in 2007, this event is organized in the small district of Baccinello and aims to draw attention to the local environmental and natural problems through conventions and excursions into the territory.
Must see events:
“Festa Mercatino della Creatività” (Creative Market Festival): an artistic and cultural event held in the town center of Scansano, this festival has won numerous awards and is gradually becoming one of the most interesting and important events of the entire Maremma.
Celebrating its 10th year in 2007, the manifestation is organized in the first week of September and always manages to attract the attention of an increasing number of tourists, who come to Scansano to appreciate the uniqueness of this event and admire the incredible beauty of this southern Tuscan town.
During the Creative Market Festival there are many stalls and small markets displaying valuable and unique handicrafts, as well as performances by clowns and interesting musical entertainment.
The festival also celebrates excellent quality of the local cuisine, showcasing the traditional dishes of the Maremma, the typical products of the area, the famous local wine Morellino di Scansano DOCG and the extra virgin olive oil of the territory.
“Festa del’Uva” (Festival of the Grape): as one of the most significant and important events organized in the wonderful town of Scansano, it is an interesting festival that provides guests with the opportunity to understand and appreciate the quality of the locally produced wine. Held during the second and third week of September, its number one purpose is to celebrate the extraordinary Morellino di Scansano, recently awarded the DOCG recognition, the highest available in Italy.
During “Festival of the Grape”, there are many interesting events organized to promote the wines produced in the territory, including tasting and demonstrations. The festival also celebrates the wine cellars of Scansano by opening their doors and offering you a glass of wine along with the best of the traditional Maremman cuisine.
This festival is simply perfect for lovers of wine and is the ideal opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary food and wine culture of Scansano, as well as admire the splendor of the town itself, rich in history and unique beauty.
