A town incredibly rich in ancient relics and breathtaking scenery, Sorano is the ideal location for the various interesting festivals, cultural events and fairs held there each year.
Here is a list of some of the most important celebrations held in Sorano, throughout the year:
January:
- “Befanate” : a traditional festival held in honour of the figure of La Befana. With no literal English translation, the Befana is much like Santa Claus for the Italians and is depicted as an old lady who brings gifts on the day of the Epiphany. This festival is held in the town centre of Sorano and is dedicated to the children, giving them sweets and chocolates.
June:
- “Settimane Soranesi” (Soranese Weeks): a local festival with traditional stalls and stands selling typical products and interesting artistic objects and handicrafts.
- “Festa della Calamita” (Festival of the Magnet): organized in the last week of the month.
July:
- “Tra Tufo e Birra” (Between Tuff and Beer): a local fair organized in the last weekend of the month and consists of food stalls and stands selling local produce.
August:
-“Mercato dell’Artigianato” (Handicraft Market): an interesting display of objects and crafts held in the streets of the historic centre of Sorano on the second week of the month.
“Festa Paesana”: (Town Festival): a festival with food stalls, typical products of the territory and musical entertainment.
-“Sagra del Prosciutto”: (Festival of the Prosciutto Ham): a celebration of ham, prosciutto and the local salami produced in the territory.
- “Settimane Musicali”: (Musical Weeks): interesting cultural and musical events held in the streets of the town, with stalls of typical produce and markets of handicrafts.
October:
- “Settimane Soranesi” (Soranese Weeks): once again this festival has traditional markets and stalls selling typical local products and fascinating artistic works and handicrafts.
December:
- “Festa per San Nicola” (Festival for St. Nicola): patron saint of the city, the festival is held on the 6th.
- “Cantine Aperte” (Open Cellars): held in the second week of the month, the cellars of the historic centre are opened and visitors are offered the opportunity to try the high quality local wines and typical products.
-“Feste Natalizie e di fine anno” (Festival for Christmas and the end of the year): a manifestation with stalls and markets, fireworks and interesting concerts.
